Email Spam
E-mail spam involves sending nearly identical messages to thousands (or millions) of recipients by E-mail. This page contains some useful information in regards to Email Spam.
What is Spam?
Spam is unwanted email. Normally not as malicious as viruses, they simply full up your email box with unwanted offers – it’s like the junk mail of the computer world! From the dealers point of view it is a form of bulk email to a list of subscribers. For the recipient of Spam it’s just a whole lot of unwanted mail.
How do people sending Spam get my email address?
People that send Spam acquire email addresses by various means, such as:
- By gathering your email address through software registration or competition entries for self selected mailing lists.
- By establishing contact with webpage administrators and arranging for email addresses which are submitted on the site to be forwarded to them.
- By running a dictionary of possible usernames against a chosen domain to get the username@domain email address.
- Your email address can also be lifted from news group and message board posts and various chat rooms.
How do I protect against Spam?
To minimise spam – and allow you to get your real emails, Xnet provides a spam filter that cuts out any emails that look suspicious. The emails themselves are saved to a separate folder – so you can look through and check from time to time, and make sure they aren’t real emails. After seven days they are deleted from the system. If you are using 'IMAP' as your mail server type you will have a folder named 'Spam' which you can view and check that there is no valid emails being blocked. Alternatively, if you are using 'Pop3' you will not be able to view the blocked spam and will need to log onto Webmail to do this.
- You can setup protective software like 'I-Spy Spam filtering' on your account, this should help minimise the spam reaching your inbox. Click here to view more software for avoiding Spam.
- Be careful who you give your email address to, and what you are agreeing to when filling in forms online.
- You can request that your email address is removed from a mailing list you have already joined by following the instructions to unsubscribe that are given in the email.
- You should never click unsubscribe in a spam email as it confirms to the sender that your email address is a valid address and therefore worth sending spam to.
- When you get a junk email do not reply! You get junk mail because someone has found reference to your email address or guessed it. By replying you are confirming that your email address is valid. You will end up receiving more junk mail.
